Today in History: The Battle of Berlin

Sixty-five years ago today, Nazi forces surrendered to the Soviet Army with the conclusion of the Battle of Berlin.

The Battle of Berlin, the final major offensive in Europe during World War II, ended on the morning of May 2, 1945. Beginning on January 16, 1945, the battle was among the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare leaving at least half a million people dead.

Before the battle ended, Adolf Hitler and many of his associates had committed suicide. Out of a pre-war Jewish population of 33,000, only 162 Jews survived.
