August Kreis III, a longtime member of the Ku Klux Klan, is the current leader of an Aryan Nation (AN) faction, a white nationalist neo-Nazi organization.
In 2001, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Kreiss III, “A longstanding exponent of the violently racist Christian Identity theology, Kreis has run a kind of Identity ministry and sometimes militia.”
As the AN shrinks, Kreis III appeals to old AN members for the organization's continued growth and survival.
In 2005, Kreis III received media attention for seeking an Aryan Nation-al Qaeda alliance. He argued that the two faced common enemies: Jews and the American government.
Currently, however, al Qaeda has not responded to his offer, though some in the US intelligence community have expressed concern over a potential White Supremacist-Islamist connection. Kreis III is among the leading advocates of such a relationship.
