A student who had to listen to a lecturer’s anti-Semitic statements during a physics class at the the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium complained, and a police investigation was initiated.
In Germany, anti-Semitic incitement is a criminal offense, punishable by a fine or a prison sentence for up to one year. The Mannheim prosecutor's office opened inquiries after the student talked with Charlotte Knobloch, the recent President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and was encouraged to file a complaint.
The Wormser Zeitung reported that the Government Bureau of Karlsruhe, as the superior authority, has already initiated disciplinary proceedings against the offensive teacher. The prosecutor's office refused to elaborate on the specific contents of the comments made by the lecturer during the Physics class. The results of the investigation are expected no later than February.
Many Jewish students attend the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim, as it offers among others Jewish religious education and Hebrew courses.
